You Design Your Self-Image
Quite possibly the biggest reason most people aren’t able to achieve the big goals they have in life is because of their self-image. Your self-image is a mix of good and bad qualities. The image you have of yourself came from other people, your experiences, the quality of your communication with yourself, and your distorted thinking.
Sometimes we make a mistake and automatically we label ourselves as clumsy. There are all different types of distorted thinking that stop us from having a healthy self-image. We also damage our self-image from bad experiences. We call ourselves stupid for getting scammed by someone we thought was a friend. We think if someone breaks up with us, it means we’re not worthy. The meaning we give to events and situations can be good or bad for our self-image.
Here is what distorted thinking sounds like:
Overgeneralization – If something bad happens once, you expect it to happen again and again.
Filtering – You see the negative and ignore the positive.
Jumping to conclusions – You think you know what someone else is thinking.
Magnifying – You imagine the worst that could happen in a situation.
Personalization – You thinking that what others say or do is a direct reaction to you.
Blaming – You hold someone else responsible for your emotional pain.
Emotional reasoning – If you feel a certain way, you think it’s true.
Should Mentality – People who think everyone should act and behave a certain way
Labelling – Extreme version of overgeneralization, with yourself or others.
Always wanting to be right – Continually trying to prove people wrong and yourself right.
